How to Accomplish Your Business Goals This Year
We are now one-half of the way through the year. How is your business going? Is your company on target to go where you want it go this year? Does it look like you will be able to look back at the end of the year and say “my business did exactly what I wanted it to do”?
Simple as it may seem, I have found that creating the business you desire requires you to first figure out specifically where you want to take your business.
However, many times people get so caught up in the hectic day to day operations of their business that they don’t take a step back and figure out from a big picture standpoint, where they want to take their organization?
Mike’s Vision for His Company
If you were in my office back in April you would have found me in a meeting with Mike. He was a calm, quiet, unassuming man in late thirties and he had a small, single person Manufacturer’s Rep business. The exciting thing was Mike was about to make a big breakthrough in his company.
During the meeting Mike said to me, I want to grow my business, but I just don’t know how. I think it can be so much more than it is today. I want to become a regional player!
The problem was that he represented just two manufacturers and only represented them in the state of Georgia. However, he did a very good job for each of them and was always in the top tier of sales for both of them.
Over the next year Mike and I worked together on a solution to his problem. Together we developed a comprehensive strategy to grow his business. Amongst other things that strategy included him going to other manufacturers and telling them that he could do the same thing for them. That is exactly what he did. And they loved it
He ended up growing from 2 to 10 manufacturers. This allowed him to add additional employees. Which enabled him to expand to North Carolina and South Carolina, then Florida, then Tennessee and Alabama. Eventually he expanded to the entire southeastern United and become a regional powerhouse.
Mike was able to do this because he saw the business as so much more than a small, single person Manufacturer’s Rep operation.
By seeing his business as more than where it was at, he was able to make the big breakthrough of starting to define a Vision for his business, believing in it and fully committing himself to making it happen.
By Mike identifying a concrete Vision that guided his organization he got the emotional satisfaction from taking his business to a new level.
How to Develop the Vision for Your Business
Just like the books The Element, The Secret and The Law of Attraction basically state that a person’s ultimate destiny is life is determined by how you view yourself and where you yourself going, we have found that with a business it is the exact same way.
That is, a business’ ultimate destiny is determined by your Vision for your organization.
But that cannot an ethereal, fuzzy Vision. Instead it needs to be a concrete, specific, detailed and time sequenced one.
How do you develop a Vision for your business? Just like Mike and I did together, you want to write down in detail exactly what you want your operations to look like 1, 3 and 5 years from now in terms of your:
- Revenue
- Customers
- Products
- Profits
- Personnel
A great tool to use for this process is to imagine that you went away to an isolated South Pacific island for one entire year, came back and just happened to stop by your business, what would its Revenue and Profits look like? How many employees would you have?
Or you went away for 3 years or 5 years – upon your return what would be your number of customers, or your customer satisfaction? How many new products would you have? Had you outgrown your current space? How would your employee morale and satisfaction look? How many vehicles would you have?
The first step of identifying a Vision for your company is the most important one, because once you have specifically defined your destination, the Vision for where you want to take your company, you can then start defining the roadmap to take it there. This will enable you to reach or exceed your revenue desires for this year and generate the profits that you hoped for this year.
